BIKEND guide · 2026

Best gravel bikes 2026: race, all-road and adventure, by price segment

Gravel stopped being one category a while ago. The press now separates race gravel — Pinarello Grevil F, Cervélo Áspero — which has dropped its bikepacking pretensions for road-style builds and aggressive geometry, from adventure bikes built to carry luggage over broken ground. Brands that used to sell a single gravel bike now run two platforms: BMC Kaius and URS, Cannondale SuperX and Topstone.

The 2026 headlines are active micro-suspension, tyre clearance stretched to 50 mm and 13-speed drivetrains going mainstream in both mechanical and electronic form. Below, each of the three strands is broken down into entry-level, mid-range and high-end, with the specs that actually decide the purchase.

Choosing quickly: more than 60% tarmac points to race or all-road; under 40% points to adventure. If you are going to carry luggage, the number and placement of mounts matters more than frame weight. And 42 mm of clearance is enough for hardpack, but you should not head into technical terrain on less than 50 mm.

The three strands of gravel

Gravel stopped being one category. The press already distinguishes race gravel bikes — such as the Pinarello Grevil F or Cervélo Áspero — that have dropped their bikepacking pretensions and run only road-style builds, with more aggressive geometry and aerodynamic profiles, from adventure bikes. Brands that used to sell a single gravel bike now offer two platforms, one for racing and one for adventure: BMC Kaius and URS, or Cannondale SuperX and Topstone.

Key 2026 note: gravel is no longer a "road bike adapted for dirt" but a platform with its own engineering. This year's innovations are active micro-suspension, tyre clearance stretched to 50 mm and the mainstream adoption of 13-speed drivetrains, both mechanical and electronic.

CATEGORY A — GRAVEL RACE

We start with the loudest strand of gravel — racing — because it is the one that has changed fastest. Five years ago a race gravel bike was an adventure frame with quick tyres; today it is a separate project, with aero tubing, long reach and no intention of ever carrying luggage. If your Sunday looks like a fast group ride on smooth fire roads, this is your category. If you are also entering something like The Traka or Unbound, read carefully what gets sacrificed: most of the comfort and almost all of the carrying capacity.

Verified details on the two headline bikes:

  • Áspero-5: borrows from the S5 road bike to improve aerodynamics by 37 watts over the previous generation. It has frame storage and top-tube mounts, but is otherwise stripped back to go fast on gravel. Even in size 58 it weighs 7.7 kg. It is aggressive, with short cranks, but uses a two-piece cockpit. The 45 mm clearance is smaller than many newer race gravel bikes.
  • S-Works Crux: has moved away from its cyclo-cross roots to become a dedicated race gravel bike, combining a light frame with good aerodynamic performance; with SRAM Red it weighs 7.1 kg. Downsides: the integrated cockpit limits adjustment, the frame is designed only for 1×, and the race geometry can feel nervous on demanding terrain.

CATEGORY B — ALL-ROAD / ALL-ROUNDER

The all-rounder strand is the one most people actually buy, even if it rarely makes the photos. This bike has to cope with Saturday's gravel, Tuesday's tarmac and, when needed, a weekend with two bags strapped on. It excels at nothing, and that is precisely why it works: a well-chosen all-road bike is usually the bike that racks up the most miles in a normal garage. In this bracket the groupset matters less than tyre clearance and mounts, because those are the parts you cannot change later.

The best-selling strand and the one that matches the mixed track/tarmac use of most riders.

GRAN FONDO 2026 test winner

Verified details:

  • Cycling Weekly names the Specialized Diverge 4 its best gravel bike of 2026: "simply, it is everything a gravel bike should be in 2026". The Diverge 4 seeks more balance, maintaining its compliance level but keeping the handling response and weight low; the most notable change is the loss of the previous Diverge STR's rear Future Shock suspension.
  • The Canyon Grizl CF 9 at €6,999 sits among the best in the test field: on gravel it combines exceptionally agile, intuitive handling with good acceleration, and with clearance for tyres up to 54 mm it has plenty in reserve when the terrain gets rough. The worst point: the integrated storage is small and impractical.
  • The Topstone Carbon 1 Lefty AXS is the best in its class on technical terrain, with the Lefty Oliver fork offering smooth support; clearance rises to 52 mm on the new model and adds frame storage. The Lefty and KingPin stays give the most flexible ride in the test, although the 440 mm wide, rigid, very round bar compromises ergonomics.

CATEGORY C — ADVENTURE / BIKEPACKING

The third strand is the one that most resembles a hardtail mountain bike with drop bars, and that is not an insult: it is exactly what you need when the plan involves several self-supported days, broken tracks and extra weight. Here you are buying stability, gearing low enough to forgive loaded climbs, and space for everything. If you are torn between this and an all-road bike, the useful question is simple: how many nights a year will you actually sleep out with the bike loaded?

Classic bikepacking

The Merida Silex 400 combines mountain-bike geometry with a road bar and room for 45 mm (47 mm front): it is at once all-road, urban bike, light tourer and winter bike. With GRX 2×, plenty of mounts and handling that favours the rider rather than frightening them, it is a bike that road cyclists can adopt easily.

With a tight budget, the Cube Nuroad Pro at €1,199 is perfectly capable for bikepacking; and if priority is comfort on long days, the Cannondale Topstone 3 and its Kingpin suspension protect your back even on the roughest tracks.

The Grizl CF 7 belongs to the Grizl OG (Original Graveller) line, designed as "the Swiss Army knife of gravel bikes", as opposed to the Grizl Escape, which is more focused on multi-day bikepacking. A slacker 71° head angle, longer wheelbase and room for 54 mm tyres let it roll over broken tracks with confidence; the raised top tube enlarges the front triangle, leaving more space for frame bags and bottles, and the magnetic FidLock mounts are a clever touch.

On tyre clearance, the Argon 18 Dark Matter wins with 57 mm front and rear, allowing almost any gravel tyre and, being equivalent to 2.25", many MTB tyres if you want more grip.

The Canyon Grizl ESC is a versatile gravel bike built for adventure, with bag mounts everywhere and comfort first, plus an optional suspension fork; it is not slow, but it is adventure-oriented. The large 57 mm clearance and suspension make the Seigla capable on terrain where most gravel bikes would struggle.

Trends worth tracking on the product page

  • Mullet or 13-speed drivetrains: MTB-derived cassettes up to 52 teeth with road shifters, or the new SRAM Red XPLR and Shimano GRX 13s.
  • Integrated storage: compartments in the down tube, now standard even on aluminium frames.
  • Progressive geometry: longer reach and shorter stems to improve control on technical terrain, following MTB evolution.
  • UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) as an almost mandatory requirement.
  • Threaded BSA bottom bracket back in gravel for easier maintenance.
  • Dropper-post compatibility on strands B and C.

Quick buying criteria

Before you look at prices, it helps to order the decision. Most buyer's remorse has nothing to do with groupsets or grams — it comes from buying a bike built for someone else's riding.

1. What ratio of tarmac to track? More than 60% tarmac → strand A or B. Less than 40% → strand C. 2. Will you carry a load? If bikepacking, the number and placement of mounts matters more than bike weight. 3. Dry rolling terrain or rough and loose? Determines minimum tyre clearance: 42 mm is enough for hardpack; below 50 mm you should not enter technical terrain. 4. 1× or 2×: 1× for simplicity and consistent terrain; 2× for real mixed use with fast tarmac, where the smaller jump between chainrings is welcome. 5. The price jump with the most return is from entry to mid-range (heavy aluminium → carbon or good aluminium with 12s groupset). From mid to high end you pay for weight, electronics and wheels, with diminishing returns.
