1. Zone3 Thermotech Changing Robe

220 Triathlon Verdict

Higher price than others, but the features are superb here, as is the styling. Score: 94%

Pros

  • Recycled materials
  • Warm sherpa fleece lining
  • Functional and shower-proof

Cons

  • Not the snazziest, but gets the job done

Specifications
Sizes XS-XL
Construction 100% recycled, water-block shell
Features Front and internal pockets, two-way zipper

Made from recycled materials with eco-waterproofing this robe ticks the style boxes in a subtle blue colour with orange details (including a funky mountain and wave design on the back). It feels light and comfortable too, but don’t let that deceive you as this is Zone3’s top-end robe, designed to help you face the harshest conditions. It’s waterproof and there’s a snuggly sherpa fleece lining which wicks away moisture without being too clingy.

Details have been well thought out too with a generous hood, front storm flap with poppers and five pockets, two of which zip up for small valuables like car keys. Sizing is S to XL and the cut is slightly tapered, which makes it feel a bit less voluminous than others available.

220 Triathlon Verdict

Transparency on impact, recycled materials and performs well, too. Score: 93%

Pros

  • Bright and colourful
  • Top marks for sustainability
  • Quality construction and comfort

Cons

  • Hard to see any!

Specifications
Sizes XS-2XL
Construction Recycled outer, lined with sherpa fleece
Features 16 colour options, comes with stuff-sack, zip chest pocket and front hand pockets

Available in a wide range of colours, this robe has been available for a few years but I love this new Fig/Heritage Yellow colourway – classy but cheerful and visible on a grey day! All the materials used are recycled plus the waterproof coating on the fabric is PFC-free. Passenger plant a tree with your order, plus you can track the journey of the product and its environmental impact online.

In a market where so many changing robes are now available, this is all-important and good to see. Performance-wise the snuggly sherpa lining was a real treat after chilly swims and the zip and construction felt good quality. It’s relatively lightweight, stood up to showers well and came with a bag to stuff it into for storage. That price is very reasonable, too.

Features 34 colour options, 2-way zip, external and internal pockets

What can we say about the classic Dryrobe Advance that hasn’t already been said..? Well, luckily the brand keep subtly tweaking their original designs just enough to allow us to give them testing space once again. We last saw this version in trendy camo and pink, but this new ‘Remix’ is one of a few versions which use surplus fabrics to create new designs here black with a pink lining and camo touches.

What stays the same is the voluminous shape with plenty of room to change inside, the snuggly hood, easy to operate chunky zip and large pockets and velcro sleeves. You also get an inner pocket for valuables and from personal experience, these robes last years – and all fabrics here are 100% recycled, too. We’ve also reviewed the best Dryrobe alternatives if you’d like more options.

Orca Thermal Parka

4. Orca Thermal Parka

220 Triathlon Verdict

Solid robe that will keep you warm and dry in the worst of conditions. Score: 87%

Pros

  • Excels in the cold and wet
  • Fully waterproof and abrasion-resistant
  • Handy adjustment points

Cons

  • Black colourway uninspiring

Specifications
Sizes S-L
Construction 100% polyester, waterproof outer, fleece lining
Features Two exterior zip pockets and inner pouch

This understated parka from Orca has a touch of the Henry Fords about it (the automotive designer is alleged to have famously said “any colour the customer wants, as long as it’s black”), which is a shame because I like a bit of colour post-swim. The polyester isn’t recycled, but Orca tell us that’s for reasons of durability. Where this parka excels though is in cold, wet weather as it’s windproof, waterproof and resistant to abrasion which makes it perfect for throwing on in outdoor environments and sitting on in the cold and damp.

The fleece lining here was very soft too, making this a favourite to pull on in testing. Large zip pulls are easy to operate with cold hands and there are Velcro cuffs and an adjustable hood. It comes in three sizes (S, M and L).

Best microfibre swim robe

5. Zone3 Microfibre Changing Robe

220 Triathlon Verdict

Handy little poncho to carry on adventures. Not as easy to dry with as towelling. Score: 85%

Pros

  • Light and packs down small
  • Super portable with mesh bag
  • Affordable price point

Cons

  • Not for winter or rainy dips

Specifications
One size S-L
Construction Microfibre
Features Front pocket, comes with stuff sack

That’s a reasonable price point for this handy little poncho, which comes in a mesh travel bag and packs up good and small for adventures. By its nature microfibre is a bit clingier than towelling, but the trade off there is weight as I’d quite happily chuck this in a rucksack to carry for impromptu swim adventures when I want a layer to use to get warm and dry afterwards without having to haul something heavy around with me.

That said, this is probably best for summer adventures than winter dips, but it depends how quickly you are able to get dried and back in your clothes! It’s one size but I found it capacious enough for drying and changing. Two designs are available – this green with back logo and a black and grey zebra print offering.

Best lightweight swim robe

Dryrobe Lite swim robe

6. Dryrobe Lite

220 Triathlon verdict

Steep price, but great performance and ideal for anyone that’s on the move or heading overseas. Score: 88%

Pros

  • Lightweight and breathable
  • Packs down into its own bag

Cons

  • Not as warm or cosy as heavier options
  • Expensive

Specifications
Sizes S-L
Construction Recycled materials, weatherproof 10,000HH, 10k breathability
Features Comes with a stuff sack, external and internal pockets, mid-length sleeves

The Dryrobe Lite uses a fabric called Alpha and I love its warmth-to-weight, breathability, moisture wicking and packability. Taking up less than half the space of many other robes, the Dryrobe Lite is much easier to travel with. In testing, it dried me pretty well, but dried off itself just as quick.

The lining proves warm, though doesn’t feel quite as cosy as thicker linings. But then, it offers much better breathability and moisture wicking than I’ve seen elsewhere. Changing underneath is easy, with plenty of room and the short arms allowing you to pull your limbs inside without fuss. Meanwhile, an adjustable hood fits nice and closely.

Multiple zip pockets offer plenty of storage options, but bear in mind that they’re not waterproofed from the inside. A durable water repellent coating and taped seams keeps the worst of the weather at bay. The garment is also predominantly made from recycled materials.

Best high-performance swim robe

7. Dryrobe Advance Long Sleeve

220 Triathlon verdict

Not cheap, but you get what you pay for here with the cosiest, best-performing robe. Score: 95%

Pros

  • Velcro on sleeves
  • Range of colours
  • Fantastic performance

Cons

  • Expensive
  • A little bulky
Scroll to see more →
Specifications
Sizes XS-XXL
Construction 100% recycled, waterproof 25,000HH, 8K breathability
Features 32 colour options, 2-way zip, external and internal pockets

The Dryrobe Advance Long Sleeve’s arms can be secured with Velcro and the robe also includes two large outer zipped pockets, a zipped waterproof inner pocket and larger ‘fleece’ pocket. The benefit of this robe’s bulk is its warmth and cosiness post-swim, which has to be the key factor for use in colder months.

This UK12 female tester tried a size small and found it had plenty of room inside to change, but was then still close-fitting enough to feel toasty. Fabrics are 100% recycled. Niftily, Dryrobe has also launched a fleece cover ($35 / £25), which the robe can be packed into to turn it into a pillow, or a bag ($15 / £10).
