No matter where you’re travelling in the world, it’s a time-honoured tradition to stop off at the airport duty-free and pick up a Toblerone bar. We’re not quite sure who thought up the idea of naming the Toblerone’s iconic triangular segments ‘Alps’, but it was a genius idea, and if you have a sweet tooth you’ll know that conquering even just three of these chocolatey Alps is no mean feat.

But for us a far better – and healthier – approach is to skip the duty-free and head straight to the source for a triple helping of real Swiss Alps, which is precisely what we’ve done in the June 2026 issue of Cyclist magazine, available now on newsstands and from the Cyclist Store.

From our base in Andermatt, our route takes in the Furka, Nufenen and Tremola Passes in a 105km loop involving upwards of 3,000m of climbing. Each of these formidable ascents offers something unique – the Furka played a starring role alongside Sean Connery in the classic James Bond film Goldfinger; the Nufenen is the highest paved pass in the Swiss Alps; the Tremola features 39 hairpins, the top 24 of which are cobbled.
